How This Session Works

This page contains the four prompts we'll use together today to demonstrate how a structured AI workflow can scaffold a complete training module — including a learning objective, a scenario-based practice question, a self-critique checklist, and a stakeholder brief — in under 10 minutes.

You're welcome to follow along using your own Claude session, copy any prompt below, or explore your own topic entirely. There are no wrong answers here.

The Four Prompts

Phase 1  ·  0:00–1:30

The Broken Prompt

Start here. Paste this into Claude and look at what comes back. We'll diagnose what's missing together before I show you how to fix it.

Write training on how to use Claude for work.
After you see the output, ask yourself: if you were a new employee, what could you actually do differently after reading this?
Phase 2  ·  1:30–5:00

The ALTO Framework

Same topic. Completely different prompt — structured around Audience, Learning Outcome, Task, and Output Format. Watch what changes.

Prompt
You are an instructional designer helping me build a short training module.

Audience: Crusoe employees who work in manufacturing operations — they
use computers occasionally but are not technical. Most have not used AI
tools before. They are skeptical of new software.

Learning outcome: By the end of this module, learners will be able to
use Claude to look up answers to common IT and process questions without
needing to contact the helpdesk, reducing their ticket volume and
improving their speed on the job.

Task: Generate the following for a 15-minute introductory training module:
1. One clear, measurable learning objective using Bloom's Taxonomy action verbs
2. A 3-step workflow a learner could follow to complete their first
   useful Claude interaction
3. One scenario-based practice question that reflects a real situation
   a manufacturing operator would actually encounter
4. One transfer prompt — a question the learner should answer on their
   own, after the training, to confirm they retained and applied the skill

Output format: Return each element with a clear header and keep language
at an 8th-grade reading level. Avoid jargon.
Try swapping in your own audience and job context. The structure stays the same — just change who the learner is and what they need to do.
Phase 3  ·  5:00–9:30

The Self-Critique

Run this immediately after Prompt 2 — in the same conversation. This is where we identify what AI can't do without a human in the loop.

Review the training module you just generated. Identify:

1. Two assumptions you made about the audience that a real
   instructional designer should verify with a stakeholder
   before finalizing
2. One place where the scenario question might not reflect
   how a manufacturing operator actually talks or thinks
   about their work
3. One thing a human facilitator or instructional designer
   needs to add that you cannot generate without direct
   observation or interviews
After Claude responds, ask yourself: what would you add to this list from your own experience? What does AI miss that a site visit would catch?
Phase 4  ·  9:30–12:00

The Manager Brief

The closing move — turning the internal work into a stakeholder communication. Paste this in the same conversation to see the full workflow output.

Based on everything above, write a one-paragraph "manager briefing" —
something I could send to a manufacturing site manager in advance of
this training to explain what it is, why it matters, and what you're
asking of them. Keep it under 150 words. No jargon. Friendly but
professional tone.
In under 10 minutes: a learning objective, a practice scenario, a self-critique checklist, and a manager communication. That's a real training skeleton — built with AI, refined by a human.
